Magnetic Disk
Floppy Disk:
·
It is also called as Disk or Diskette.
·
It is a non-volatile and permanent type of storage
device.
·
It is a removable storage device remove from the
floppy disk drive.
·
It is used to store small amount of data and its speed
or access time is very slow.
·
It is consisting of round shape disk plate made up of
plastic and coated with metal oxide.
·
The disk in flexible in nature so it is called floppy
disk. Present inside the floppy disk cover.
·
It is use for backup of any important information from
the hard disk in a floppy disk.
·
If the hard disk is fails or infected with the virus,
then the floppy disk is used to store and move the data easily from the
computer to another computer.
·
The floppy is available in the market several sizes
3.5 inch, 5.25 inch, 8 inch.
·
Sizes Capacity
3.5” 1.44 MB
5.25” 1.2 MB
8” 80 KB – 242 KB

How to Protect a Floppy Disk?
·
Avoid the binding of floppy disk.
·
Insert the disk in to the floppy disk drive carefully
with posted level.
·
Do not touch the area of the disk view through an
envelope with the window.
·
Do not expose
the floppy disk to sun light, high temperature and strong magnetic field.
Hard Disk:
ii. It is a
non-volatile memory because it stores the data and information permanently.
iii. The hard
disk is used as a secondary memory in the computer system.
iv. In the hard
disk retrieve the data is very fast.
v. It is used
to store up to 1 TB or more.
vi. The data
and information store in hard disk in the form of magnetic that is 0s
and 1s. so it is called magnetic disk.
vii. All the
programs and software installed in the hard disk.
Structure of Hard Disk:
i.
It is consisting of a spindle or central shaft that
hold a group of disk or platters with a dust proof and air tight case or cover.

iii. Each
platter requires two read and write head and this read and write head used to
read and write the information from platters.
iv. The
distance between two platters half inch (1/2).
v. All the
read and write heads are attach to a single access arm so they cannot move
independently.
vi. When the
spindle or central shaft rotates then the all platters are rotate in one
direction and same speed.
vii. The platter
is divide in to invisible concentric circle that is called track and this track
in numbered from the outside of the platter starting of the zero.
viii.
The track is again divide in the pie shaped section
that is called sectors.
ix. The group
of same number tracks in different platters is called as cylinder.
x. The size of
the sectors vey in size but they store same amount of data in each sectors.
Latency Time: -it is the time
taken to reach the particular track of a Hard Disk.
Seek Time: - it is the
time taken to read the record on a hard disk (track).
Access Time: - it is the
sum of latency time and seek time.
It is the time taken by read and
write head to read and write the record from a hard disk.
